What is a
PAT Test?
Portable Appliance Testing, otherwise known as PAT testing, is the examination of electrical appliances to ensure they are safe to use. These examinations are conducted through visual inspections and electronic tests due to not all defects of an appliance being traceable through only one of the examination methods. If the appliance is considered as a fixed appliance, stationary appliance, IT appliance, moveable appliance, portable appliance, cables and charger, or hand-held appliance, then it will require a PAT test.
A standard PAT test can include:
-An earth continuity test, to conclude whether the connection to the mains plug and the earthed metal parts of the appliance have a strong connection.
-A lead polarity test, to ensure all single pole devices, such as fuses, switches and circuit breakers, have been connected into the phase conductor only, and not the neutral conductor,
-An insulation resistance test, to measure the voltage of two different parts of an appliance to test the efficiency of the insulation. This can also be used over time to test the durability of the insulation.
-A standard visual inspection, to identify any immediate problems with the casing of the electrical appliance.
